A six-year-old girl has died after being hit by a car on a street in Paisley in Renfrewshire.

Police Scotland said she and a seven-year-old girl were both struck by the vehicle on Johnston Street at about 17:30 on Saturday.

Emergency services attended but the youngest girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

The seven-year-old was taken to hospital for treatment. It is understood her injuries were not serious and she was later discharged.

Several police vehicles and ambulances were dispatched to the scene on Saturday.

The street, in the centre of Paisley, is a short cobbled road with tenement flats above shops and takeaway outlets.

Police Scotland said an investigation into the incident was ongoing.

Sgt Jack Swindells said: "Our thoughts are with the family of the girl who died. They ask that their privacy is respected at this time."

Witnesses have been urged to contact Police Scotland.
