Plans have been put forward to boost 5G coverage with new antennas at a city's rooftop station.

Telefónica UK Ltd (O2) and Cornerstone have applied to Sunderland City Council for permission to upgrade the base station at the Sunderland Telephone Exchange, on St Thomas Street.

In documents submitted to the authority, the companies said 5G was in "very high demand" and the work would help them increase capacity.

They said: "The public interest of the system is clear from the considerable benefits that will flow and it makes a significant and major contribution towards sustainable objectives."

The work would involve installing new antennas, radio equipment and replacing fibre cables, according to the Local Democracy Reporting service.

The application said 5G was "the next and highly significant advancement in mobile connectivity".

It said: "In the UK there are now more than 111 million subscriptions to mobile networks and mobile services now exceed fixed landlines in terms of customer numbers and usage."
