Second body found after building fire

News imageMark Graham/BBC A two-storey stone-built commercial building with multiple broken and damaged windows is shown from street level. Numerous window panes on both floors are shattered or missing entirely, with some openings partially covered by curtains, boards, or remaining fragments of glass. Electrical cables are visible running across the exterior wall near the upper floor. A weathered sign mounted on the front of the building reads "new weighing line" with a telephone number beneath it, although parts of the text are difficult to read. The building appears vacant or neglected, and the surrounding stonework shows signs of age and wear. An arched stone entrance is partially visible on the right-hand side of the image.Mark Graham/BBC

A second body has been discovered following a building fire in a market town, police said.

The body was found earlier in the rubble of a property on the corner of Warwick Road and Mount Street in Batley after a large blaze in the early hours of 15 August.

West Yorkshire Police recovered a different body on Wednesday and the cause of the fire remains under investigation, the force said.

A police spokesperson said: "I can confirm additional human remains have been found at the location today and work remains ongoing to identify the person sadly found deceased at the scene on Wednesday."

In the foreground, the bonnet of a marked police vehicle occupies the right side of the image, while a large yellow road sign on the left reads “Diversion” with a left-pointing arrow. A uniformed police officer wearing a high-visibility vest stands near the cordoned area, speaking with another person. Blue-and-white police tape and temporary road barriers block access to part of the street. In the background, a multi-storey stone building with an arched entrance is visible, along with a business sign reading “Dilbar’s.” The lighting suggests late afternoon or early evening, and the road appears closed as traffic is redirected away from the area.Mark Graham/BBC
The cause of the fire is still unknown

They added: "We will of course be conducting all possible enquires to also identify the second person we have found."

The force has also asked anyone who may have seen anything unusual or has any CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident to come forward.

Det Insp Tom Hilyer of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team added: "This has been and remains a complex investigation and I want to reassure residents that all necessary resources are being utilised to determine the full circumstances of what occurred."
