Early Newcastle captain memorabilia up for auction

Memorabilia connected to one of Newcastle United's "most important early captains" is going under the hammer.

Colin Veitch, born in Heaton in 1881, led the club to First Division victories in 1905, 1907 and 1909, as well as FA Cup success in 1910.

An 18ct gold pocket watch was gifted to him following the first victory, which was funded by fans through a public subscription. It will be up for sale alongside other pieces of Newcastle's history.

Jack Orgill, auctioneer at Anderson & Garland, said: "Veitch was instrumental in shaping the club during one of the most successful periods in its history and these pieces represent an important part of Newcastle's heritage."

The auctioneers said the watch has remained within the same family for generations and according to legend was gifted to the vendor's great uncle, who was a friend of Veitch.

The inscription reads: "Newcastle United F.C. Presented by Public Subscription raised through the 'North Mail' To Colin M. Veitch To commemorate the League Championship success 1904-05."

It is estimated to sell for £2,500 to £3,500.

Also featured is a 1906 Football League versus Scottish League 15ct yellow gold winners medal presented to Veitch as captain, and a life-sized Newcastle footballer figure commemorating the club's 1910 FA Cup Final victory over Barnsley.

It stands at almost 2m high (6.5ft).

Orgill said: "It is incredibly rare to see material connected so closely to one of Newcastle United's most important early captains come to market, particularly with such strong provenance."

Public viewing will take place on Monday at Anderson House between 10:00 and 15:00 BST.

The auction will take place 4 June.
