"More durable" plastic gas pipes will be laid in Redcar

Work to replace ageing metal gas pipes with "more reliable" plastic ones will last into the new year.

Northern Gas Networks (NGN) is starting around 16 weeks of work on Kirkleatham Lane and Broadway East in Redcar, Teesside, on Monday.

Temporary multi-way traffic signals will be in place during the project, starting on Kirkleatham Lane at the junction with Broadway East and moving towards the junction with Ennis Road as work progresses.

Site manager Steven Storey said plastic pipes help reduce the risk of leaks, adding: "Modern plastic gas pipes do not corrode, are highly resistant to wear and tear underground, and can flex with ground movement."

The metal pipes in the area were first laid in about 1935, NGN said.

Storey said: "This essential upgrade will help us continue to provide a safe and reliable gas supply to homes and businesses across Redcar."
