A football tournament has raised money for sports coaching in memory of a Somerset rugby player.

The Freddie Pring Memorial Fund was set up in memory of 20-year-old Freddie Pring after he died in an accidental fall from a hotel balcony in Majorca in 2019.

The fund hosted its biggest fundraiser to date at Minehead AFC earlier, with 16 teams competing in the five-a-side football tournament.

"At the heart of it all was a simple but powerful message: to honour the memory of Freddie Pring, a young man whose impact on those around him ran far deeper than many knew," a spokesperson for the fund said.

A spokesperson for the fund said it was established to continue the rugby player's legacy.

"When Freddie was lost, we came to understand just how much he had given back - supporting people in the community through sport and mental health, quietly making a difference in the lives of others," they said.

"We raise funds to support others in the community, just as Freddie had done, and ensure his name lives on in the causes he cared about."

The fund mainly raises money for sports coaching to improve people's mental health. It also raises money for local sports teams with football the "natural choice" for the fundraising event, as it was a sport Freddie loved.

"The atmosphere today reflected everything he stood for," the spokesperson added.

The event will last into the evening, when there will be live music and food.
