Dogs and horses on Alderney beach trial approved
BBCA trial allowing dogs and horses on a beach in Alderney has been agreed and will start from Monday.
The States of Alderney said owners could take their animals on Longis Beach between between 17:00 and 08:00 BST from 1 June until 15 September this year and in 2027.
It said the decision followed a public consultation which showed "a mixed but overall supportive response to a managed change". It also highlighted support for "limited access at specific times of day".
The States said it had considered the improved accessibility for dog owners and animal welfare benefits alongside concerns about fouling and animal control.
It said it also considered the safety of children and "the potential impact on other beach users and wildlife".
The States said the trial would monitored with an emphasis on responsible ownership.
It said dog and horse owners were "expected to ensure animals are kept under control at all times, that any mess is cleared promptly, and that consideration is given to other beach users".
The States said it would review the trial across both years to "assess its impact and effectiveness before determining any longer-term approach".
