Seven human skeletons found at construction site

Seven human skeletons believed to date back to the Medieval era have been found beneath land being redeveloped.

The bones were found by construction workers "within" the Queensgate roundabout, which is being developed as part of Peterborough's City Link walkway project.

On social media, a city council spokesperson said an archaeologist believed the remains dated from a cemetery which existed during the Medieval period.

The local authority said the City Link works may be delayed by four weeks while the remains were removed.

"We are looking at options to reduce this delay in later phases of the project," they added.

An archaeological licence had been obtained by the local authority, the spokesperson said, and an archaeologist had been appointed "to ensure the skeletons are reburied in line with national guidelines".

The City Link walkway is a project which aims to transform the area and create a connection between the railway station and the city centre.

It forms part of Peterborough's £65m Station Quarter redevelopment which began earlier this year.
