Businesses count cost of burglary spree

A string of break-ins at businesses has left owners counting the cost after cash, charity donations and other items were stolen.

Devon and Cornwall Police said it was investigating seven burglaries reported between 22 and 30 July in Exeter and south Devon and believed the offences could be linked.

The latest incident happened at Teign Bean coffee shop in Exminster, where a money box containing cash was taken after a door was forced sometime between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning.

PC Max Bowling said the break-ins had caused real distress to local business owners and added: "The theft of money raised for charitable causes makes these offences particularly upsetting."

In most cases, offenders had smashed windows and doors before stealing money and other valuables.

Other businesses targeted included Whipton and Pinhoe Labour Club in Exeter, where a money box and two charity collection tins were stolen.

At Haldon Forest Diner in Kennford, two charity boxes were taken and damage was caused to the till area.

At Shooters sports bar in Dawlish, a money tin containing about £200 was stolen after a glass door was broken late on 26 July.

Police said two men wearing hooded tops and gloves were seen at the scene.

Earlier that day, thieves stole around a dozen bottles of spirits and a charity collection box from Spar Stores in Starcross.

Officers said two men dressed in dark clothing and wearing gloves left the store in a red car.

Starcross Golf and St Davids Veterinary Centre in Exminster were also among the businesses affected.

Boyling said: "We are working to establish whether these burglaries are linked and are keen to hear from anyone who may have information that could assist with our enquiries."

He urged residents and businesses to check CCTV and doorbell camera footage for anything that could help identify suspects or suspicious vehicles.
