A city bus company is scrapping its £1 fares for evening journeys after blaming rising costs for the decision.

Preston Bus said the company had been "proud" to support the £1 fare cap scheme and "the benefits it has brought to our customers and the wider community working in partnership with Lancashire County Council".

However, a mesage on its website added: "While we recognise the positive impact the scheme has had, the level of reimbursement provided in 2025 has not carried through into 2026.

"As operating costs continue to rise, this has made it increasingly difficult for us to sustainably remain within the scheme."

It added: "We regret that we will be withdrawing from the scheme from 27 April."

Preston Bus said the change will only affect evening journeys on routes: 6, 8, 16, 19/19A, 23, 31 and 35.

"Please note that some journeys on these services are tendered services and will continue to accept the £1 fare cap," the company continued.

"We understand this may be disappointing and would like to thank our customers for their continued support.

"We remain committed to providing safe, reliable, and high-quality bus services across our network."

In January the firm also withdrew from the £3 single bus fare cap.
