Construction for a new housing estate in Newark has started, councillors have confirmed.

Last month Newark and Sherwood District Council said the first phase of work to demolish old houses and build more than 200 homes on the Yorke Drive estate was set to start.

The plans - which also include a new sports pavilion and pitches - were approved in February 2025.

Announcing the beginning of the building work on Tuesday, the council described it as "a major milestone for residents and the wider community".

Lee Brazier, the authority's portfolio holder for housing, said: "This regeneration is about much more than buildings.

"It is about creating a safer, greener and better-connected neighbourhood, with good-quality homes and facilities that local people can enjoy for generations.

"I want to thank residents for their patience, honesty and involvement, which have helped shape the plans and will remain central as the work progresses."
