Drilling takes place for coastal flood project

Investigation work for a coastal flood defence scheme protecting against rising sea levels is under way.

The Government of Jersey said the work at Havre des Pas would help it better understand ground conditions beneath the beach and shoreline.

The Havre des Pas Coastal Flood Alleviation Scheme aims to deliver long-term protection in an exposed to wave overtopping and rising sea levels, the government said.

Work was expected to last until Wednesday and involved specialist drilling and ground testing at a number of spots along the beach, officials said.

The government said the beach remained open throughout the investigation, although some small areas would be temporarily fenced off for safety, as well as short slipway closures.

Project documents state the coastline from La Collette to La Grande Charrière Slipway was the "highest priority" for the government with water levels projected to threaten homes, businesses and public areas by the early 2040s.
