Landmark building safeguarded by £250k grant

An "important historical landmark" lying derelict will soon be brought back into use after receiving a £250,000 grant.

Known by local residents as the Cheers building, the Grade II listed property on South Street in Boston town centre has stood empty for several years.

Boston Borough Council has now granted £250,000 to Blackfriars Arts Centre to carry out improvements, with the building set to become a community arts hub and pop-up museum.

Councillor Dale Broughton, leader of the authority, said he was "absolutely delighted" to fund the renovation, which he said "holds so many memories" for local people.

Improvements have already been made to the exterior of the building, with internal works due to commence soon.

Broughton said: "As you can see, works have begun on the building and it's already looking so much better. I commend everyone who has been involved in the process to now."

He said the building would provide a "much-needed base" to community initiatives including the Boston 400 Group, Boston School of Mosaics and the Crafty Coffee Club.

Blackfriars Arts Centre also owns the town's Blackfriars Theatre.
