Two found guilty after man woken and attacked
Sussex PoliceTwo men who attacked and repeatedly kicked a man who had fallen asleep outside a shop in Brighton have been convicted.
Oliver Priddle, 26, and Niraj Amaidas, 25, had both faced charges of murder and wounding with intent after Cameron Devlin died, aged 34, after the attack on 21 December, 2019.
Following a trial, Priddle and Amaidas were cleared of murder and manslaughter but found guilty of wounding with intent at Brighton Crown Court earlier.
After the hearing, police said Devlin died from sepsis five days after the attack, and specialist medical expertise was sought to establish the link between the assault, his injuries and his death.
Priddle, of Peacock Lane, Brighton, and Amaidas, of Colwyn Close, Crawley, are due to be sentenced on Friday.
Family's six-year wait
Det Insp James Meanwell, from Sussex Police, said the investigation had been "exceptionally complex" and the verdicts "a long time coming".
He said Devlin's family waited more than six years for proceedings to conclude.
Describing Cameron as "a young man, beloved husband, son, brother and friend", he said: "His loss will continue to be felt by all who knew him."
Devlin had fallen asleep outside a shop in North Street during a night out, when he was approached and woken, police said.
A fight involving Devlin and a group of men led to the 34-year-old falling to the ground, where he was repeatedly kicked.
Emergency teams were called and police arrested four men at Brighton railway station. A fifth arrest followed in January 2020.
Devlin suffered a serious injury to his shoulder and a laceration to his face.
Despite receiving treatment, he died on 26 December after developing sepsis as a complication of the injury, police said.
Officers said the investigation included consultation with national specialists to establish the circumstances of the injury and the causal link between the assault and Devlin's death.
The Crown Prosecution Service authorised charges on 13 August 2025, leading to the trial this year.
