Murder arrest after death of woman in her 60s

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a woman in her 60s in South Gloucestershire.

Emergency services were called to an address in Overnhill Road, Downend, shortly after 1:45 BST on Sunday.

The woman was found with serious injuries and was taken to hospital where she died a few hours later. The man, also on his 60s, was arrested shortly afterwards.

Avon & Somerset Police Superintendent Karen Corrigan said the man was "in police custody where he is being interviewed under caution as we seek to further our understanding of the tragic events that unfolded".

She said: "We know this news will cause great shock in the local community but we would like to reassure everyone that we do not consider there to be any ongoing risk to the public.

"Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the woman's grieving family at this devastating time for them.

"A specially-trained officer will be providing them with support going forward."

A police spokesperson said people could expect to see more officers in the area over the coming days to provide reassurance to the community and as part of the investigation.
