Jail for man who stabbed his mother to death
Cambridgeshire ConstabularyA man has been sentenced to life in prison for murdering his mother.
Gregory Coulson stabbed Carmen Coulson, 67, to death at their home in the Longthorpe area of Peterborough in February last year.
Despite initially telling police he had stabbed her, Coulson denied murder and claimed intruders had broken into his home and killed her, but a jury unanimously found him guilty.
A judge at Huntingdon Law Courts handed the 32-year-old, of Lingwood Park, a life sentence with a minimum term of 24 years and 248 days.
Police were called by Coulson during the early hours of 9 February, but they believe he had killed his mother the night before.
A post-mortem examination found she had wounds all over her body, including a fatal stab wound to the heart.
During police interviews, he claimed he had spent the evening in question in his bedroom listening to music, painting and drinking vodka.
Police said he told officers the attack was "totally out of my character" and added that "I've not been happy for a while".
Coulson told them he got a steak knife from the kitchen and stabbed his mother to death at about 22:00 GMT.
He added that he then went to bed as he had not known what to do, before getting up to make the call to police.
