Train services between Brighton and Haywards Heath were delayed into the evening on Monday as police investigated

Two men have been arrested and an axe seized after reports of an altercation on a train in East Sussex.

Train services were disrupted for up to three hours between Brighton and Haywards Heath after the incident on a train in the Cooksbridge area shortly after 19:00 BST on Monday.

Specialist firearm officers were sent to Haywards Heath station after reports that the axe was seen, but there was no evidence that anyone was struck by it, British Transport Police (BTP) said.

The men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon, and remain in custody.

It is believed that those involved knew each other and left the train at Cooksbridge, a BTP spokesperson said.

A Southern Railway spokesperson said that Haywards Heath station was closed for about 20 minutes as police investigated, but services continued to run through.

Police said anyone with information should contact them.
