Eight arrests after youths cross railway line to enter music festival

Eight people including a 12-year-old boy have been charged in connection with disorder at a weekend dance music event in Edinburgh.

Police Scotland said youths attempted to scale perimeter fencing and trespassed on the railway line approaching Waverley Station to enter the Fly festival in Princes Street Gardens without tickets.

Officers said they charged males aged 12, 15, 17, three aged 18, a 20-year-old and a 27-year-old with offences including assault, breach of the peace and misuse of drugs.

The force said reports had been made to the relevant authorities and inquiries were ongoing.

The Fly festival attracts thousands of dance music fans to the Ross Bandstand in Princes Street Gardens every year.

Bus services were also disrupted as a result of the disorder, police said.

Supt Neil Wilson described the incidents as "unacceptable and dangerous".

He asked for anyone with information on further outbreaks of disorder to contact officers.

Supt Wilson added: "While the majority of people came along to the event in good spirits and without incident, there were others intent on gaining entry without tickets and involved in disorder and violence.

"This type of behaviour will not be tolerated. Everyone should be able to attend the city centre without fear of intimidation or harm at the hands of those who cannot conduct themselves in an appropriate manner."
