Hundreds of homes without power after workshop fire

Hundreds of residents woke up to a power cut after fire damaged overhead power cables.

Fire crews were called to Burton Road, near Bridport, Dorset, shortly after 05:00 BST, where a private workshop was alight.

National Grid said power had been restored to 401 properties, but 20 remained without electricity.

It apologised for the disruption and said it hoped to reconnect the remaining customers by 13:00.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said the road was closed at the junction to Marsh Barn and the water treatment plant while crews from two stations tackled the blaze, which was out by 07:40.

"The electricity board was requested due to the fire affecting a main power line," it added.
