A teenager has died and a boy has been critically injured after a moped crash, Kent Police have said.

The force said officers approached two people on a moped on foot in Beach Street at about 19:50 GMT on Saturday before it left the scene and crashed in a nearby alleyway.

An 18-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and the 16-year-old passenger remains in a critical condition in a London hospital.

Kent Police said it has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) and an investigation is underway.

Officers were carrying out a foot patrol near Beach Street and Royal Road, in the area of Sheppey Leisure Centre, when the incident happened.

Police said officers at the scene immediately provided first aid.

"Officers are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, or the events immediately beforehand, to contact them", the force said.

Flowers have been left near the scene in an alleyway next to Sheppey Leisure Centre.
