A horse had to be hoisted out of a ditch after he somehow became trapped.

Snowy, a 23-year-old horse, became stuck and surrounded by branches in the ditch at Rownall Road in Wetley Rocks, Staffordshire on Monday afternoon.

Fire crews has to remove the branches before putting straps around him and lifting him out. Two nearby residents helped operate a telehandler (a cross between a crane and a loader) to help lift and move Snowy into a nearby field.

After being checked over by a vet Snowy was able to walk back to his stable where he was left to recover. Fire crews said the horse was "closely monitored" following the ordeal.
