Teenagers stabbed youth to death outside library

Four people have been convicted over the killing of a teenager, found stabbed near a library.

Michael Ababio was attacked on Broad Street, near Foleshill Library in Coventry, on the evening of 22 February and died the following morning.

Ismail Nabeel from Coventry, who is also 18, had admitted a manslaughter charge, but has been found guilty of his murder after a trial at Warwick Crown Court.

A 17-year-old, who cannot be named, previously admitted a charge of murder, with two others Mahat Mohammed, 19, and Shakeel Ahmed, 18, previously admitting to manslaughter.

Following the death, members of the group who attacked him attempted to lie low, with one fleeing to Pakistan in an attempt to avoid justice, said West Midlands Police.

Det Insp Nigel Box, who led the investigation, said the teenager's death was a "tragic and senseless loss of life" and officers had worked "relentlessly" to identify suspects, charge them and secure prosecutions.

Box added: "He was attacked by this group, two of whom pursued and cornered him next to the library before stabbing him.

"The level of premeditation which went into the killing, along with the lengths the four defendants went to in order to avoid arrest, shows how deliberate and knowingly wrong their actions were."

In a tribute released after his death, Ababio's twin said most people "won't know what it is like to have a twin, but I do".

"Michael was more than just a brother, he was my second half."

All four will be sentenced in October, at a date to be decided.
