Two injured as A1(M) closed due to crash
GoogleTwo people have been taken to hospital - one in a critical condition - following a crash, which closed part of the A1(M) in both directions during rush hour.
The major route between junction 62 near Durham and junction 63 near Chester-le-Street was shut overnight. The southbound carriageway has since reopened.
There were long delays reported on diversion routes around Durham while crash investigators worked at the scene.
Elsewhere, a crash involving two vehicles closed the highway in both directions at Belford in Northumberland at about 10:00 BST.
Following the first crash, the North East Ambulance Service said two men were taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
Efforts were under way to clear debris from the road following the "serious collision", National Highways said.
The southbound carriageway reopened at about 10:30, but Durham Police has warned drivers to expect the northbound road to be closed "for some time".
In Northumberland, Northumbria Police said it was at the scene of the crash on the southbound carriageway on the A1 at Belford.
It said the road was closed in both directions, with the southbound carriageway being diverted through Seahouses and Bamburgh.
National Highways added the northbound carriageway was closed between the junctions with the A1068 and the A1167 south of Berwick-Upon-Tweed.
