Plans to knock down a car showroom in Derby and build a block of student flats have been given the go-ahead.

Derby City Council approved a planning application to redevelop the site in Monk Street into a block of flats that would be six storeys tall at its highest point.

According to planning documents, the proposed development would consist of 102 rooms for students.

A report submitted by applicant Monk Street Ltd said the proposals would "relieve pressure" on housing needs in the city and would meet a growing need for high-quality student accommodation.

According to the plans, the development would range from three to six storeys in height and consist of 16 cluster flats.

"Our aim is to create a prominent landmark building that will play a vital role in Derby's future development," a report submitted by the applicant stated.

It added the scheme had been designed to avoid "adverse overshadowing" and would be in an "extremely sustainable" location.

Planning documents said the proposed development would be "car-free" apart from disabled parking, and stated the location had "excellent transport links".
