Four US Chinooks stop off at Land's End airport

Four US army Chinook helicopters made a quick stop off at one of the UK's smallest commercial airports.

The tandem rotor military helicopters landed at Land's End Airport, Cornwall on Tuesday to refuel, before heading on to the Channel Islands.

The Isles of Scilly Steamship Group, which owns and operates the airport, said it believed the helicopters were part of US President Donald Trump's two day visit to Ireland, and were en route to Jersey.

Chris Pearson, manager of Land's End Airport, said it was an "incredible sight" as it had "never happened before and I can't imagine it will happen again."

The airport which is just a few miles from Land's End, primarily connects Cornwall with the Isles of Scilly, using smaller Twin Otter aircrafts.

Pearson added: "It's not every day you see one Chinook at Land's End Airport, let alone four - it was a real privilege to welcome them.

"These are enormous helicopters, and seeing four arriving together at our airport at the very western tip of Cornwall was an incredible sight.

"The visit highlights the unique versatility of Land's End Airport - we may be small, but we can certainly hold our own alongside much larger airports."

The Chinooks also landed in Jersey on Tuesday before leaving the next day.
