Head teacher defends suspending 25 pupils in one week

A new head teacher has defended suspending 25 pupils in his first week after being criticised by some parents.

Dan Jeffries, the new interim principal at Frome College in Somerset, said no pupil is ever suspended for small matters such as minor dress code issues or lateness.

Some parents have complained on social media, claiming their children were suspended for actions such as laughing in class.

Jeffries said he was aware of "online rumours", adding: "We strongly encourage any parent with questions, concerns, or feedback to contact the school directly so we can work together constructively."

Jeffries said that his priority as interim principal has been to make sure every pupil studies in a safe and supportive environment.

"While we have received no formal complaints from parents, I want to directly address concerns raised on social media and clarify our school policies," Jeffries added.

"We hold high expectations for behavior, asking every student to work hard, be kind, and do their best. These standards prepare young people for successful futures, and our role is to provide the structure and guidance to help them thrive."

He said his first weeks have been "fantastic" and the majority of pupils and families have supported him.

A Deparment for Education spokesperson said all children deserve to learn in a calm and safe classroom.

"While poor behaviour remains a challenge in some schools, the country has seen the biggest termly year-on-year decreases in suspension and permanent exclusion rates since the pandemic," the spokesperson added.

"High standards of behaviour are essential to raising standards in our schools, and we will continue working with schools to ensure every child has the opportunity to achieve and thrive."
