A new meteorological mast and other equipment will be built at a power station.

EDF Nuclear Energy Generation Limited applied for an equipment compound at Hartlepool Power Station, off Tees Road, which includes a 10m (32ft) lattice mast, a data logger closet and anti-climb security fencing.

The scheme followed an assessment at each of EDF's operational power stations, which found existing meteorological measurement arrangements could be improved.

Hartlepool Borough Council approved the application which detailed the development was needed to measure, collect and analyse data to provide an "accurate baseline of weather conditions".

The application said the compound was required for a temporary period of 10 years.

Hartlepool nuclear power station, which came online 43 years ago, recently announced it received another lifespan extension.

The application site proposed at Hartlepool Power Station sits within the applicant's landholding, west of the power station and adjacent to the cricket ground.

It was noted that the site had been chosen to "avoid sensitive habitats" and access will be through a maintained track, preventing unnecessary impacts on plants.
