John Burkhill has raised more than £1.2m for Macmillan Cancer Support

A pram-pushing fundraiser who has collected more than £1.2m for Macmillan Cancer Support has been honoured with a star on the Sheffield Legends Walk of Fame.

The plaque for John Burkhill, better known as the Man with the Pram, was unveiled outside Sheffield Town Hall.

Burkhill has spent decades raising money for charity following the deaths of his wife from breast cancer in 1992, and his daughter Karen, who died the previous year.

Speaking on Tuesday, Burkhill, who is known for his bright green wig and highly decorated pram, said he was "incredibly proud and humbled" by the recognition.

"If my fundraising has encouraged even one person to support Macmillan or help someone affected by cancer, then every mile and every push of the pram has been worthwhile," he said.

"As long as I'm able, I'll keep pushing the pram, raising awareness and supporting Macmillan."

Jennifer Dunstan was one of two women who started a petition to get Burkhill recognised on the walk of fame.

She said: "Today we've been able to see the collective dream of so many Sheffielders realised.

"You would be hard pushed to meet anyone whose life hasn't been touched by cancer.

"This is the only time you'll see Blades fans, Wednesday fans, people young, old, any race, religion or none, all coming together."

Burkhill's fundraising has included long-distance walks and races across the UK, with the money raised supporting Macmillan.

The Sheffield Legends scheme recognises people who have made a significant contribution to the city and its communities, including Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill, Helen Sharman and Michael Palin.

The plaque was unveiled by Lord Mayor of Sheffield Andrew Sangar, who said Burkhill had "devoted his life to helping others" following personal tragedy.

He said: "His kindness, determination and generosity have touched countless lives and made a real difference across our city."

By way of an additional tribute the fountains and water features in the Peace Garden were turned green in a nod to Burkhill's trademark green wig.

Sarah Peet, from Macmillan, said the charity was "incredibly proud and thrilled" to see Burkhill honoured.
