The centre's gym is due to be expanded

Work on a £3.7m redevelopment of a leisure centre in New Mills will start at the end of November, the borough council has said.

The revamp of MyActive New Mills will include expanding the gym to provide an additional 20 equipment spaces and the creation of a new multi-use studio and community wellness suite.

The building, in Hyde Bank Road, will also get a new-look reception area, a refurbished spin studio and dry changing area, and new bike parking hoops and shelter.

High Peak Borough Council said the work would lead to phased temporary closures of the centre with some service levels being maintained throughout.

The centre's squash courts will be removed as part of the revamp and the council said it was working with the squash club to help players find alternative facilities.

It added the club was planning to partner with an existing venue and the council had agreed a small grant to support the move.

Councillor Damien Greenhalgh, deputy leader and executive councillor for regeneration, tourism and leisure, said: "Our focus throughout the project will be on supporting our members, keeping people active, and maintaining as many services as possible while the improvements take place.

"We know that building work will bring some temporary disruption, but we're committed to keeping customers informed and making the transition as straightforward as possible."
