Month long clean-up campaign launched
Durham County CouncilA month long community clean-up campaign has been launched with a beach litter pick.
Durham County Council is encouraging residents, schools, community groups and businesses to take part in its Big Autumn Clean throughout September.
The campaign was launched with Durham Wildlife Trust at a litter pick at Crimdon beach, with 52 volunteers collecting 35 bags of waste including a tyre and a carpet.
The Reform-led authority's cabinet member for environment Kyle Genner said: "People across County Durham rightly want to live in a clean and tidy environment but, like many places across the UK, litter has become a real issue."
He said the initiative followed a similar scheme in spring in which almost 4,000 bags of litter were collected across 442 organised events.
Genner said: "We're incredibly heartened by the large number of volunteers and litter picking events we already have lined up and we'd love for more people to get involved."
