Albert Williams has been charged with the murder of Charlene Dowsell

A 66-year-old man has appeared in court charged with murdering a woman on a city centre street.

Albert Williams is accused of killing Charlene Dowsell outside a property on St Vincent Road, Newport, on Saturday, 18 July.

Dowsell was stabbed once in the back, Newport Magistrates' Court heard on Monday.

Williams, of Ruperra Street, spoke only to confirm his name, age and address, and was remanded in custody. He will appear at Cardiff Crown Court on 22 July.

Gwent Police said officers, including firearms officers, attended the scene after a report of an altercation on 18 July.
