One person taken to hospital after barracks fire

A person has been taken to hospital after a fire broke out in an accommodation block at Catterick Garrison military barracks.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said multiple crews were sent at 19:48 BST on Thursday where the blaze was found to be "well alight".

The service said the person was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation while fire crews remained on scene until 02:43 BST.

It said on-site personnel kept a watching brief overnight and a fire investigation was due to take place.

Along with firefighters from North Yorkshire, additional resources were sent from several other stations.

A spokesperson for County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said one crew attended from Darlington fire station to assist with an aerial ladder platform.

The BBC has asked the Ministry of Defence for comment.

Hipswell and Colburn councillor Kevin Foster had earlier told local media: "My immediate concern is for the safety and wellbeing of everyone at the camp, including our military personnel, their families and the emergency services responding to the incident."

Catterick Garrison is the largest army base in the country and is home to more than 14,000 military personnel, according to government figures.

Several major combat regiments and support units are based there, such as The Light Dragoons and the 1st Battalion The Royal Yorkshire Regiment.

The Infantry Training Centre is also located in Catterick and provides basic and advanced training for soldiers joining the infantry.
