Fire crews have extinguished a blaze at a derelict hospital that led to the evacuation of a health centre next door.

People were led to safety from Keynsham Health Centre due to the fire at the derelict Old Keynsham Hospital, in St Clements Road, Keynsham, on Thursday afternoon.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service said 12 fire engines and a turntable ladder were sent to the site. There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is still unknown.

A spokesperson said most of the fire had been put out by 18:00 BST and St Clements Road and surrounding roads have since reopened.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service said: "The cause of the fire is currently unknown with a full fire investigation yet to take place."

During the incident residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed and to avoid the area where possible.

Roads were closed and people living nearby were asked to stay indoors

Crews remained at the scene until late in the evening on Thursday to check for any remaining hotspots.

Avon and Somerset Police were also at the scene to help with traffic management.
