Glasgow's Burrell Collection to hold first ever fashion show
Burrell CollectionGlasgow's Burrell Collection is to host its first ever fashion show later this month, inspired by the 9,000 treasures within the museum.
The event will see Scottish designer Flora McFarlane debut her 28-look collection, entitled Return to the Garden.
The collection features knitwear and bespoke tailoring that she says was influenced by the museum's Chinese, French, and medieval artworks.
Announced for 9 May, the show is part of a wider creative programme ongoing at the Burrell, including a series of workshops designed to encourage and support young creative people throughout the year.
McFarlane, a Glasgow School of Art graduate, previously appeared on Icons of Style with Kirsty Wark and her work has featured in an exhibition at the V&A in Dundee.
She said: "I am deeply inspired by Scotland's creativity and heritage, and my work is shaped by Scotland's significant contribution to art and design.
"My grandmother's family hail from Kirkintilloch and Galston, where they were artisans involved in the textiles industry and stonemasonry. My designs reimagine Scottish heritage textiles through my own creative language."
She added that her designs feature skills learned from cashmere mills in Hawick, the last lace mill in Ayrshire and time spent working with a leather tannery.
Burrell CollectionJuliet Fellows-Smith, the museum manager of the Burrell collection, added: "This venture demonstrates how museums can support new talent and connect historic collections with contemporary audiences in fresh, meaningful ways.
"Flora's fashion offers an innovative, insightful interpretation of our world-class collection, and we are excited to see people's reactions."
Guests attending on the night will also get to meet the curators and conservators who care for the collection, which has work spanning 6,000 years.
Two years ago the museum was named the winner of the Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland award.
