Businesses to campaign about derelict buildings

Businesses along a road in Grimsby are demanding action to improve two derelict buildings on a key route in the town.

Traders along Cleethorpe Road are planning to place banners and draw up a petition protesting about the state of the former Albion pub and an empty commercial property opposite it.

Grant Berry, from the Cleethorpe Road Traders Association, said: "It's a vital gateway road into the area and it does affect the economy and image of Cleethorpe Road."

North East Lincolnshire Council said: "We actively monitor and respond to reports of dilapidated or abandoned buildings – some of which are privately owned."

The Cleethorpe Road Traders Association formed after a bus lane was proposed along part of the road in 2025.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the idea was scrapped by the council after opposition to it over the potential loss of parking spaces.

Berry said the group continued to meet once a month to discuss how to improve the area.

"We're all capable and we're not doing this for fun, we've got better things to do, we all want this sorted," he said.

Nicola Aisthorpe, councillor for the East Marsh ward, said councillors had repeatedly demanded action on the buildings.

"The derelict buildings are a blight on Cleethorpe Road and a highly visible symbol of neglect," she said.

In a statement, North East Lincolnshire Council said none of the buildings were in a state that required immediate action, but if that changed, they would take the necessary steps "with public safety at the heart of any decision".

The council said it appreciated residents' concerns and would investigate the issues raised and take the next steps where necessary.
