Northumbria Police said it was continuing to search the river for the missing man

A search for a man believed to have gone into the water after a disturbance has entered its fifth day.

Northumbria Police said it was called to Redheugh Bridge in Gateshead, just before 22:00 BST on Friday, over reports a group of people were involved in an altercation, with a man entering the water.

The force said a 48-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of a section 18 assault and further arrested on suspicion of murder. She has since been released on bail.

A police marine unit and specialist teams from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service have been carrying out searches of the River Tyne.

The force said inquiries were continuing.

Det Insp Andy Miller has called for any witnesses to contact police.
