Apprentice electrician Charlie Ellis Saw, from Boston in Lincolnshire, entered the water at Grasmere in Cumbria on Saturday 8 August, with the aim of swimming to the other side.
Members of the public helped him and his friend to the shore before CPR was started. Saw was taken to Royal Preston Hospital by helicopter but died in the early hours of the following day.
Area Coroner for Cumbria Margaret Taylor officially opened the inquest into his "unnatural death" at Workington Coroner's Court.
The inquest was adjourned and is set to resume on 9 December.
