An exhibition has been unveiled celebrating 90 years of Peterborough Lido.

The Grade II listed Art Deco pool opened in 1936 and has survived several threats of closure and even a World War Two bombing raid in 1942.

Life at the Lido, which runs until 30 May at Peterborough Museum, will bring together memories, photographs, and personal stories from generations of visitors - as well as its importance to the city.

Amy Rowe, from the museum, said: "We will be looking at significant events, how it all started and looking at memories that people have over those 90 years."

It has been created with the support of lido enthusiasts and draws inspiration from a book curated by the Friends of Peterborough Lido, including images of the pool over the years.

The lido, on Bishop's Road, has been described by users as "the city's crown jewel".

This year, mechanical covers were installed in time for the opening of the 2026 season on 28 March - two months earlier than last year.

Talking about the lido architecture, Rowe said: "The building is described as a cross between a Spanish hacienda and a Roman fort and it was co-designed by five architects.

"They came together as part of a competition to see who was going to design the lido but then they actually decided to all work together free of charge to the Peterborough City Corporation - and produce the wonderful building that is the lido.

"It's really beautiful inside and out and anyone that's been there will know how special it is."

A highlight of the exhibition is a detailed timeline showcasing key milestones and memorable moments across the Lido's 90-year history.

It also has several black and white pictures on display, including one from the opening ceremony for the pool and of the VIP tickets issued that night.

A swimming costume from 1936 belonging to local swimmer Bill Marriott is also on display.

Rowe said: "It's been lovely putting it together.

"I've worked with the friends of Peterborough Lido and it's been great to go over the history and really celebrate such an iconic building in the city."
