Gate proposed for alleyway used by drug users
GoogleAn alleyway used by drug-users and fly-tippers could be closed off to the general public.
The path runs between Clarence Road and a council-owned car park on Gladstone Street in Peterborough.
Residents have repeatedly raised concerns over several years about incidents in the alleyway, according to a council report, with problems also including criminal damage, noise, suspected thefts and fires.
The city council has proposed the installation of lockable gates at the alleyway's entrances, restricting access to landowners, tenants, the council and the emergency services. A consultation on the proposal will run until 22 November.
The council said analysis of police data for the surrounding area found 202 crimes were reported between July 2025 and June 2026, including 72 violent and sexual offences.
One incident it highlighted in the alleyway was a fly-tipped sofa which was set alight, with the flames spreading to a household's fence.
GoogleThe council has proposed using a Public Spaces Protection Order to install the gates.
People wishing to walk between Clarence Road and Gladstone Street could use the footpath on Occupation Road instead, the report added.
