Boy held at young offenders' institution dies

A 16-year-old boy has died after he was found unresponsive atFeltham Young Offender Institution (YOI) in west London,the Metropolitan Policehas said.

He was a detainee at HMP Feltham A, which holds teenagers aged between 15 and 18 who are on remand or have been convicted.

The London Ambulance Service (LAS) said it was called to the site just after 22:00 BST on Monday to reports of an "unwell child". The boy was treated at the scene and taken to hospital "as a priority", where he died.

The Met Police said it was notified of the death in the early hours of Tuesday by HMP Feltham staff.A Youth Custody Service spokesperson said the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman would investigate the death.

'Saddened'

The Met said the teenager's death was being treated as "unexpected" and inquiries were ongoing.

A post-mortem examination will be scheduled, the force added.

The LAS said it sent an ambulance crew, two paramedics in fast-response cars, an advanced paramedic and an incident response officer to the scene.

The Youth Custody Service spokesperson added: "We were saddened to hear of the death of a child from YOI Feltham, who died in hospital on Monday 20 April, and our thoughts are with their friends and family.

"As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will investigate. It would be inappropriate to comment further at this time."
