Two men have been charged after a firearm and ammunition were discovered in a car near Lockerbie.

Police stopped the vehicle on the M74 at about 19:55 on Friday as part of efforts to tackle serious and organised crime, after receiving a tip-off.

The men, aged 35 and 39, were arrested and charged and are due to appear at Dumfries Sheriff Court on Monday.

Det Supt Steven Elliott said: "Firearms clearly pose a risk and cause harm to our communities, and this recovery sends a clear message to those involved that we will not tolerate their illegal activities."

He added: "We remain absolutely committed to tackling serious and organised crime, and information from the public is vital to this work."
