Deputy Gavin St Pier and his wife was released without charge after being arrested on Friday

A former vice-president of Guernsey's Policy & Resources Committee (P&R) says ex-chief minister Deputy Gavin St Pier should reconsider a decision to stand for a vacancy on P&R, which he said may have been made in "haste".

St Pier stepped down from P&R after being arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, which he denies.

St Pier said he intended to seek a fresh mandate from the States and return to the committee in an election due after his resigning.

Responding, Deputy Mark Helyar said: "I understand Deputy St Pier intends to stand again for the same role. That is a decision which may have been made in haste in light of his recent arrest and should in my view be reconsidered."

Helyar said: "That is a decision which may have been made in haste in light of his recent arrest and should, in my view, be reconsidered.

He added: "We should try our best to be focused on what is best for Guernsey."

St Pier told the BBC he and his wife was released without charge and "unequivocally deny any wrongdoing".

Guernsey Police said the arrest related to the same investigation which involved the couple being arrested in December last year on suspicion of harassment.
