Shreeji Grocery wants to be able to sell alcohol until 23:00

Neighbours of a convenience store in a residential street have objected to its application for a new premises licence.

Shreeji Grocery on Landcross Drive, Northampton, requested permission from West Northamptonshire Council to sell alcohol from 07:00 to 23:00 daily.

Local residents have submitted 20 objections, citing concerns about public safety, the prevention of crime and disorder, public nuisance and protecting children from harm.

A representative of the shop said it would consider closing by 21:00 to work constructively with the community.

Among those who objected was Guilio Grosso, who said: "Widening the opportunity for potential abuse of alcohol and associated behaviours is really unacceptable."

But the shop representative stressed it was "not a pub or a bar" and that no alcohol could be consumed on the premises.

"They can buy and then take home," they said.

They added that the shop sold a range of everyday grocery items and that alcohol was a "secondary part of the business".

Neighbours questioned the need for another outlet selling alcohol, highlighting the nearby off-licence and Post Office.

The licensing sub-committee can grant the licence subject to conditions and set licensable hours, exclude a licensable activity, or fully reject the application.
