Thorncliffe Crematorium in Barrow was damaged by a fire in March

A crematorium damaged in a fire is to close for up to two months while its roof is replaced.

An accidental blaze erupted at Barrow's Thorncliffe Crematorium in March, forcing ceremonies to be moved for about three weeks while emergency repair work was carried out.

Westmorland and Furness Council, which operates the facility, said chapel-based services would be paused from the end of the month for six to eight weeks while the roof and chimneys are replaced.

The Liberal Democrat-led authority has also decided to take the opportunity to upgrade the cremators and carry out interior decoration.

"This will secure the building for the future and ensure it has more up-to-date and resilient facilities," a spokesman said.
