A number of people have moved from their homes due to a security alert in Omagh, County Tyrone.

Police and Ammunition Technical Officers (ATO) are at the scene of the alert in Gardenville Avenue, which is off the Gortin Road.

Cordons are in place at the scene of the alert.

Police have asked the public to avoid the area at this time.

Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) assembly member Tom Buchanan said the incident has caused "significant disruption".

He said investigations are still continuing into "what police have described as a hazardous material".

"Anything which can pose a risk to safety is of significant concern, particularly in a very quiet residential area such as this."
