A man has appeared in court charged with murder after the body of a missing man was found at a property in Barnsley, police have said.

Andrew Fowler, 60, of George Street, Barnsley, appeared at Sheffield Magistrates' Court and has been remanded in custody to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on Tuesday.

Officers began investigating the disappearance of a 62-year-old Sheffield man after receiving a missing person report at about 17:45 BST on Friday.

Later that evening, at about 22:15, emergency services were called to George Street in the Worsborough Bridge area, where the man's body was found.

Three areas were cordoned off following the discovery of the body, including two locations on George Street and a section of the Trans Pennine Trail nearby.

As part of standard procedure, South Yorkshire Police said it had made a self-referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct because the man had previously been reported missing.
