Thousands attend first day of Battle of Flowers

Thousands of people have gathered in St Helier for the Battle of Flowers.

Victoria Avenue has been transformed into a grand floral arena for the annual event.

A total of 23 teams showed off their creations in the day parade which was filled with music and dancing.

The floats, which were designed and constructed by parish teams, community groups and volunteers, have parked up for the night at Lower Park so people can see them close-up.

Battle of Flowers chairman Martyn Maguire said he had not expected to see so many people at the event.

"People are really enjoying it," he said.

"The Battle of Flowers is steeped in tradition, it's over 125 years old... the community spirit is just tremendous."
