Work to shore up storm-damaged coast

Work is under way to shore up a stretch of coast which was damaged in winter storms.

The £1.5m scheme at Craster, Northumberland, aims to protect the bankside at Dunstanburgh Road and the nearby wastewater pumping station.

Northumbrian Water said "severe" winter storms accelerated erosion there "increasing the need for long-term protection of the site" and its infrastructure.

Project manager Joe Williamson said: "We recognise that carrying out construction work during the busy summer season is not ideal."

The work is due to be completed by November and involves building a "rock armour" embankment and restoring vegetation.
