Firefighters tackle large scrapyard blaze

Firefighters have spent the night tackling a large fire at a scrapyard in Barnsley.

Footage shared on social media showed huge plumes of black smoke billowing across the sky from the blaze in Boulder Bridge Lane, Carlton.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to the area on Saturday evening, with 10 engines, an aerial ladder platform and a number of operational support vehicles deployed to the scene at its peak.

It said the fire involved quantities of scrap metal and tyres, and advised people living nearby to keep their windows and doors closed, adding that crews were expected to be on scene throughout Sunday morning.
