Emergency services were called to the incident which took place in the early hours of Saturday morning

A teenager and a man have been arrested following a collision on a bridge that killed a motorcyclist.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said emergency services had been called just after 01:20 BST to an incident involving a car and a motorcycle on Northam Bridge across the River Itchen in Southampton.

A 17-year-old boy and a 29-year-old man, from Southampton, were in a silver VW Polo, which collided with a white Yamaha YZF, whose rider, a 17-year-old from Fareham, died in hospital from his injuries.

The man and the teenager were arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving and both remain in custody at this time.

The force said the victim's next of kin had been informed.

"We would like to thank motorists for their patience as the Northam Bridge was closed for several hours before it could be reopened," it added in a statement.
